Urine Ph and Ketones
Ketones are produced when the body burns fat for energy, instead of glucose. Because HCG forces the body to turn to fat stores for energy, ketones should be present in the urine if it is working properly. This process is highly acidic and can cause the urine Ph to be acidic. When the urine shows that the body is acidic, HCG does not work well for weight loss. Also, if the body is too alkaline weight loss can be slower than desired.
People who do not lose a pound a day on HCG should be more closely monitored to help manage their acid/alkaline balance and to keep it in optimal range. Dr. Simeon carefully chose the foods that work the best with HCG during his study. He chose them for their high alkaline content to reduce the acidity caused by the extra ketones being released by the body.
Raw spinach is one of the most alkaline foods that we consume. Beet greens run a close second and radishes, cucumbers and lettuce are all alkaline in nature. The fruits on the HCG diet; strawberries, grapefruit, apples and oranges are also alkaline foods. For most people following the diet plan exactly will produce the best results. Occasionally a person who is too alkaline will need to adjust their diet, for a short time, to correct this imbalance.
